Ruby’s mother runs an art gallery that displays black artists’ work, and is under police surveillance. Ruby’s mother and her artists are living in danger, because they could get arrested anytime. Apart from those problems, Ruby also has to endure problems from school involving snobby and rich Desmond and his attempts at having a romantic relationship with Ruby. After Ruby rejects, Desmond declares that anyone who’s Ruby’s friend is Desmond’s enemy. Almost everyone in the school joins Desmond, including Ruby’s former best friend Monica. That’s why the title is “Ruby Red”, because it means danger red and love red. This book shows how bad the segregation is by describing people who have died and people who have been injured because of it. Julian, a black artist, was tormented because of this. One day, when he was coming home, a group of thugs surrounded him and cut off all of his fingers so he couldn’t paint. Ben (the school gardener)’s daughter Sophia was killed in the Soweto campaign, and Ben couldn’t go home because he needed to work and earn money. I think this book is wonderful because not only it talks about the segregation, but also talks about problems at school. I think Ruby is really brave when she stands up for herself and refuses Desmond even though she knew she would become really unpopular.
